City Toolbar Help

The City Toolbar appears on some of the City pages.  If a city has a toolbar, it is indicated by an asterisk after the name in the Select City scroll window (e.g.,  Paris * ).  We plan to add the City Toolbar to all the cities in the future.  This is the sample City Toolbar for Paris, France.  All hyperlinks are active for the toolbar shown here.

Reading left to write, the buttons are as follows:

Live webcamC
Web and Vidcam Locations.
  • There are 3 types of CAM's that may be shown for a place or city.

Live webcam  Clicking the camera icon will take you to a selected webcam site for the city. Sometimes we include 2 webcam sites, especially if one of the webcam sites is controllable. Webcams may update from a few seconds to once a day depending on the site!  Some webcams only operate part of the day.  We try to find one that updates within a minute and operates 24 hours a day.  We prefer outdoor scenes.

Live webcamC  If the camera icon has the letter C beside or C on it, it means that the camera is controllable by the user. You will need the appropriate software downloaded to use this camera. This is usually free. Some webcams may use Java applets and you must then enable Java for your browser. (Click here for more information.)

If the camera icon has the letter V on it, it means that the camera is a video camera with real-time sound and motion.  You will need RealPlayer, Windows Media Player or other appropriate software which is usually free.

Red background. If we have not found a webcam or vidcam for this city, the button background will be red and no link will exist.

  • Clicking 1-Webcams will usually take you to a Webcam Directory site's list of webcams for this city or place or to the same webcam site as the icon.

  • Clicking 2-Webcams will usually take you to a Webcam Directory website with a list of webcams for this city or place.
  • Clicking 2-Camlist will usually take you to a list of webcams for this city or place.

Click here for a general list of webcam portals and webcam search sites.
Weather Weather
  • Clicking the Weather icon or Weather will take you to a weather website that covers this city, if any. The Information icon is not clickable if there is no weather information at all for the city or country it is in.

Red background. If we have not found a weather site for this city, the button background will be red and no link will exist.
Date/Time/Sunrise/Sunset Time
  • Clicking the Time icon or Time will show you the date and time at this city and the sunrise and sunset times. This will open in the city frame instead of a separate browser. To return to the city frame, either click the back button on your browser or click the Go button under the Select Window if the city is still displayed there.

  • Red background. If we have not found a site with the time for this city, the button background will be red and no link will exist.

Radio Site or Station Audio/Video
  • Clicking the microphone icon will take you to a sample audio/video or radio/TV site for the city if one is available.   We try to find a news radio station in English.  Otherwise, we look for a music station in the city in any language.  You will need either the RealOne Player, Windows Media Player or Yahoo! Player to listen to the audio.  They all have free versions you can download.
  • Red background. If we have not found an audio site for this city, the button background will be red and no link will exist.

  • Clicking 1-Station will take you to the same station as the microphone icon is linked to.

  • Clicking 2-List will take you to a site with a list of web radio stations for this place.
Map Map
  • Clicking the map icon or Map will take you to a map of the city. You can minimize the map site while you look at other features since it opens in a separate browser window.

  • Clicking Search will take you to the PCL City map page at their website. Use the A-Z Locator bar to see if they list maps for this city. If so, you will see a list of maps from different sources for the city. Sometimes we take you to the city section at PCL.
  • Red background. If we have not found a Real audio or video site for this city, the button background will be red and no link will exist.

  • Clicking the Newspaper icon or 1-News will take you to an on-line news source in English such as a newspaper, TV station or other information source that has a website in the city, or in the country that covers this city. If we cannot find a news source in English in the country, we will try to find a news source in the U.S. or U.K. that covers this country.  If there is a T next to the icon it indicates that the news source was not in English and we link to a Google English translation of the website.
  •  The 2-List takes you to a website that has a good list of News and media for this city or country.

Red background. If we have not found a news source in English, or no automatic translation service that has an English translation for this language, the button background will be red and no link will exist.

Government Tourist Information Information
  • Clicking the Information icon will take you to a Government Tourist information website for this city in English. If we cannot find an official government tourist website in English, but find one in a language that can be translated into English using the Google translation tools, we go ahead and have Google automatically translate the homepage into English and that is the link you will go to. If you click on a link on the homepage that goes to another page on their website, that page will also be automatically translated into English as well.  We indicate this with a (T) as in 1-GOV(T).

    Red background.
If we have not found any government tourist information at all, or it is in a language that cannot be automatically translated by Google, the button background will be red and no link will exist.
Guidebook Guide
  • Clicking the City Guide icon will take you to a city guide. You can minimize the City Guide site while you look at other features since it opens in a separate browser window.
  • Red background. If we have not found any city guide in English, the button background will be red and no link will exist.

Toolbar Help Toolbar Help
  • Clicking the Toolbar icon will open the City Toolbar help page in a separate browser window so you can minimize it and refer to it when needed. Clicking the word "Help" will open the City Toolbar help page in the same window for quick reference. Use your browser back arrow to show the city page again.
